Gas prices and Valley graduations are stories you expect to see in the in the paper. Mathew Blades of MIX 96.9's morning show was shocked to find a headline reading "Mesa foster kids program gets air conditioning unit stolen" on azcentral.com. According to the article, "thieves apparently hopped an iron fence over the weekend to steal the air conditioning unit at Helen's Hope Chest, the Mesa United Way's program for foster children." The thieves cut open the unit and removed the parts, including the motor and copper wiring and fittings, James said.
Blades said, "I hate stories like this, I mean how are you going to steal from people that are just trying to help out those less fortunate?
Out of frustration, Blades took it to the airwaves, "how can someone steal from charity?" Within minutes the MIX 96.9 phone lines lit up with offers from Orangutan Home Services and Sun Devil Plumbing. Both companies went straight to Mesa's United Way to inspect the damage.
Richard James, Director of Finance at United Way, informed MIX 96.9 that Orangutan had a contract in hand and the total cost to United Way read $0! The new $10,000 unit will be installed Wednesday, as well as a new thermostat and Orangutan will also be building a steel fence around it so the new one can't be taken. It's great to see that there are good people in the world, willing to take advantage of the resources they have at hand.
