- 1). Place the tang of the knife over one side of the bolster, and mark the hole positions onto the bolster from the knife tang with a pencil. Remove the knife tang and drill the holes through the bolster with a drill press. Use a bit the same diameter as the pin material.
- 2). Place the bolster that is not drilled out under the bolster you put the holes in and fit them together the way they will look on the knife. Mark the hole positions in the bottom bolster through the holes you drilled in the top bolster with a pencil.
- 3). Set the bolster with the holes aside and drill the holes in the remaining bolster with the drill press and bit. Cut four pins from the pin material the width of the two bolsters and the knife tang, using metal cutters to cut the pins.
- 4). Cut a small taper in the face of each hole in the bolsters with a countersink bit on the drill press. Put the knife tang between the two bolsters and slide the pins through the holes.
- 5). Set the knife and bolsters on a solid flat surface and use a ball-peen hammer to flatten the pins on one side. Turn the knife over and flatten the pins on the other side with the hammer to secure the bolsters to the knife.
