Smile Makeovers with Porcelain Veneers

About two decades ago, cosmetic dentistry came out with a logical and effective procedure that helps people attain whiter and more prefect teeth. Now, getting porcelain veneers is one of the most sought-after aesthetic dental procedures. The dental option is done through coating the surface of the front teeth with thin wafers or shells that have natural white color.

There are many reasons why cosmetic dentists recommend porcelain veneers. First, badly stained teeth are not easily concealed nor are they remedied even by constant brushing. The veneers serve as active coverings that hide existing stains. Discoloration is also a common problem that prompts the application of dental veneers. However, be reminded that discolored teeth are not necessarily unhealthy. It's just that some people are not confident smiling with yellowish teeth beaming from their lips.

Because porcelain veneers are coats to the teeth, they are also used to improve or treat damaged teeth, which could have been incurred due to excessive grinding, intake of carbonated drinks, and injury. In some cases, porcelain veneers are used as gap fillers between teeth that are separated by noticeable spaces.

It takes about five to 10 years before porcelain veneers worn out. This way, porcelain veneers are more practical and reliable compared to composite veneers, which only last about a year or two. Of course, the longevity and life span of the dental structures would depend on overall hygiene and oral care practices. To maintain porcelain veneers, regular visit to the cosmetic dentist is recommended.

There are two methods used in creating porcelain veneers, namely prep and non-prep. Prep veneers are traditionally prepared veneers, with indications about the preparedness of the teeth for the procedure. A thin enamel layer will be extracted from the tooth so veneer could be placed without the bulk. Non-prep porcelain veneers are less complicated compared to the prep. These are cemented into the teeth surface even without any preparation and extraction or removal of surface tooth enamel. Thus, the materials are practically thinner than in prep veneers. Local anesthesia is required in both veneer procedures.

Usually, the first veneers are temporary, as the dentist will still have to send the mold of your teeth to an affiliated dental laboratory for the fabrication and creation of the permanent veneers. You will be asked to return after a few days or weeks for the removal of the temporary set and the installation of the permanent porcelain veneers. Because of this, there is a need to arrange your schedule to accommodate frequent visits to the dentist's clinic. Minimum of two visits to the dentist is standard.

Before undergoing procedures for attachment of porcelain veneers, make sure you get high quality porcelain. This is because good materials will help prevent decay and staining. The life span and the quality, especially of the appearance and color, are also highly dependent on the type of porcelain used. Go for the high-grade materials.
