How to Repair the Hour Hand for a Grandfather Clock

    • 1). Push the hour hand in slightly towards the dial, if the hands are jammed together and are stopping the movement. Confirm the hour hand does not touch the dial. If the hands are still touching, bend the minute hand back toward you slightly to free up the movement.

    • 2). Push the hour hand back onto the hour tube if it is on a newer or Japanese clock and has become loose. On these clocks, the hour hand is on a friction fit and will be tight again once pushed back onto the tube.

    • 3). Adjust the hour hand if the clock chimes the wrong hour. The next time the clock chimes, move the hour hand to the hour of the number of chimes played. Reset the correct time by rotating the minute hand clockwise until the minute and the hour are set at the correct time. Ensure that you pause the rotation every time you reach a section where the clock must chime.
