Valerian root is termed as “to be strong or healthy”. Valerian root is a perennial flowering plant having sweet smelling pink and white flowers over it. It is found in many countries such as Europe, South Africa, Asia and North America. Valerian roots are used in treating many diseases such as liver problems, digestive ailments, nausea and insomnia. Traditionally it is used for correcting sleeplessness, epilepsy, hysteria and diuretic.
Sometimes Valerian root act as alternative and complementary medicine because of its sedative properties. Although valerian root can treat epilepsy but it doesn't have clinical support. At present valerian root herbs are used for treating insomnia.
Valerian root has got the full backup of American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) which has claimed it has the safest herb. But few cases reveals adverse side effects such as feeling nervous, anxious,and restlessness.
So pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to not to use valerian root unless guidedby an expert. One should even not use valerian root while driving. Also valerian root intake should be prohibited when the person is under the medication of anesthesia, sedatives and anit-anxiety medication, without consulting one's doctor.
