What do you think of when you hear the term gardening? Do you think of sweat and hard work? Now is the time for re-education and a change of pace.
Gardening can now be fun and include the entire family.
Gardening was once a potentially dangerous job.
The dangerous use of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers was not to be dismissed lightly.
I wish I had taken it more seriously.
The switch to organics makes it safe for the entire family.
If you are ready to begin the switch from chemical gardening to organics, you can start with a good bath, a plant bath, that is.
Take a spray bottle, fill it 3/4 full with water and add about 3-5 drops of dish washing soap.
Swish it around in the bottle and take it outside.
Lightly spray the leaves of your plants.
Don't drown them, just spray lightly.
The next step is to purchase and apply a balanced organic fertilizer formulated for your area of the country.
Water it into the soil.
You have now started your organic program.

A concept of organic gardening includes the whole package.
Everything matters.
It is a way to observe first hand how nature works as a unit to sustain life.
You can decide as a family, how you want to design your program.
Put a bird house up in your backyard along with water and a bird feeder.
However, to be fair, please make certain the bird habitat is safe in your backyard or even apartment balcony.
If you have cats or other animals that could be harmful to the birds, please consider helping establish a bird sanctuary in a park nearby.
Otherwise, the birds may become a snack for kitty who know this was her backyard first! When you introduce new plants to your yard or garden, it is important to buy them from an organic source.
Non-organic growers use chemicals that force quick growth and blooms to the plants.
It looks great when they are sold in the market, however, it does not establish a healthy plant or root system.
Ask your local organic garden center for suggestions on plants for your moisture and light requirements that are specific to your yard.
As a family, you can plan, plant and harvest from your own backyard.
Enjoy.
