- 1). Turn the handle on the water supply valve until it stops. Look behind the toilet bowl for the water supply line or hose connecting to the tank. Follow the line back to the wall or floor where it connects to the water supply valve.
- 2). Remove the toilet tank lid and set it aside.
- 3). Press down on the tank handle to open the flapper. Keep pressure on the handle to allow all the water inside the tank time to drain out. If the flapper or chain is malfunctioning, reach inside the tank and lift up the flapper with your hand to let the water out.
- 4). Unhook the chain from the top of the flapper.
- 5). Pull the flapper out of the tank. The two main ways that flappers are connected are either by hinges on either side of the tank outlet or directly to the overflow tube. Remove a flapper connected to the overflow tube by lifting it straight up and off the tube. Snap out a flapper connected to the hinges.
- 6). Insert a new flapper into the tank, either by snapping it into place or slipping it over the overflow tube as needed. Connect the handle chain to the flapper.
- 7). Rotate the water supply handle to the left. After the tank fills, flush and check the operation of the flapper. Make any adjustments to the chain length as needed.
