Is Affiliate Marketing a Scam?

After one solid week of researching the affiliate marketing and bum marketing arenas, I still don't know if I want to make the leap into this field.
I do believe that many people are very successful in these endeavors.
I just don't know if the average joe like myself has the right knowledge and tools to thrive in the online income industry.
I can tell which products are just plain marketing schemes; on the same note there seem to be some really excited programs out there that have made people some very handsome, small fortunes.
I do know that the "Get Rich in 10 minutes" genre of these programs are bogus.
It seems to me that the programs such as clickbank, which allows affiliate marketers to market products and make good commissions sounds pretty legit.
This is a program I am very interested in.
I have read some really good reviews on many ways to effectively earn income online.
There seem to be a vast number of forums that are set up for indivduals who have embarked upon the work at home career.
Kudos to those who have made a great living from affiliate marketing.
I am greatly jealous and wish I could talk to some of those people who took the plunge and now enjoy the surreal life of not having to wake up with a 9 to 5 day ahead of them.
Most of the programs I reviewed and are interested in offer 100% money back guarantees.
  This appeals to me greatly.
I just don't want to go through the hassle of choosing the wrong programs and wasting my time and money.
The best review I've read so far was a blog from blogger labeled, 101 Ways to "Successfully Generate Online Traffic" This article didn't try to push me to buy anything, instead gave me an abundance of resources, descriptions, and links to research the affiliate marketing arena.
I read through the blog and followed all the links to the various resources so that I could have a better understanding of affiliate marketing and how to properly bring traffic to advertised, profit-making products.
All of the information on this site was free and I even subscribed to the blog.
I am still a little doubtful and discouraged to jump into this field.
I am ready to make a career change though because I hate my job.
With that aside, it's good to know that there is plenty of free information on how to go about getting started.
I am going to read and research before I make my decision.
I plan to construct a follow-up article if I decide to embark upon the journey into this exciting field.
