- 1). Test the wood of the affected area by sprinkling a small amount of water on it. If the wood absorbs the moisture in a prompt manner, it is ready to be refinished. If it takes longer than a few minutes, wait 2-3 weeks before continuing.
- 2). Use the orbital sander to sand all exposed surfaces of the gray redwood. Move the device in small circular motions to remove any loose or dead strips of woods. Continue until the entire surface has been sanded. Use a vacuum to remove anything that was removed during the sanding process.
- 3). Apply the wood stain to the surface of the gray redwood using a paint roller. Apply in short, smooth motions to ensure that every inch of the wood is able to absorb the stain. Use a paint brush to apply the stain to smaller areas of the wood including any railings, legs, small crevices or ornamentations that may be present. Continue until the entire piece has been stained. If the wood is exceptionally porous, a second coat may be necessary after 24 hours.
