- 1). Plan a theme for your party. Examples include pirates, tropical, movies and "Amazing Race." Think of what your child likes and use that to set the theme for the party.
- 2). Pick the location of your scavenger hunt. It could be your house, backyard, a mall or a park. The location will also be determined by the ages of the children. Teens could do a scavenger hunt in the mall with a parent available. Younger children would be safer at home or at a park supervised by a parent.
- 3). Decide what the treasure or prize will be and where you will hide it. The treasure or prize could be bags of goodies for each child or a present for the birthday child with smaller gifts for each guest. If your party theme is pirates, for example, you could hide the treasure in a chest that has to be opened or dug up.
- 4). Decide what the clues will be written on and how simple or complex to make them. If the theme of your party is pirates put your clues on scrolls. Roll them up and tie them with string. For children under 10 keep the clues simple such as "I'm tall and have green leaves." For teens you could use codes or riddles.
- 5). Figure out where to hide the clues. If the theme is pirates, you could put the clue inside a bottle and float it in water, bury a clue that has to be dug up, or stick to a tree with a knife. Where you hide them will be determined by the ages of the children.
