- 1). Trim any overhanging tree branches that may allow raccoons to climb up trees to get inside fenced-in areas, using garden shears.
- 2). Erect a 1-inch mesh wire fence around flower beds. The fence should be 3 feet high, with 6 inches buried below the soil line.
- 3). Set a battery-operated, portable radio or MP3 player in the flower garden and leave it on at night, every night. The noise will discourage raccoons and opossums from visiting the area.
- 4). Plant a perimeter of raccoon-repelling greenery around flower beds. Vining plants such as pumpkins and winter squash that cover the ground discourage raccoons from walking around them.
- 5). Place all trash in metal trashcans with lids that are difficult to dislodge. Both raccoons and opossums are attracted to trash. If they cannot get to it, they will not be so keen on your property.
- 6). Cover all chimneys with a chimney cap. Raccoons may start living inside chimneys and they will venture into your garden nightly in search of food.
- 7). Fill or plug all burrows and holes you find. Search around the foundation of the house for holes that may house opossums or raccoons. By eliminating their living spaces, you will drive the pests away from your property.
