“Honeywell’s APU decreases on-aircraft maintenance costs by up to 45 percent while experiencing up to 60 percent fewer unscheduled repairs over other APUs in its class size,” said Mike Madsen, Vice President of Airlines, Honeywell Aerospace. “This reliability, coupled with lower weight, increased route efficiencies and high reliability provided by the Honeywell avionics package, will reduce Kingfisher’s overall operating costs through lower fuel burn, more direct routing, and reduced maintenance and training costs.”
“At Kingfisher Airlines, our promise to our customer is safety and service, and that is why we have been provided the five-star designation,” said Mr. Hitesh Patel, Executive Vice President, Kingfisher Airlines. “Honeywell’s ability to customize its service offering to match with airlines’ specific needs adds to their credit of being a technologically superior company.”
Honeywell’s 131-9A APU is the most commonly used APU for single-aisle commercial transport, with more than 1,700 APUs in service including forward-fit and retrofit. An APU is a small gas-powered turbine engine that provides bleed air for main engine starting and electrical power for cockpit and galley systems.
Honeywell introduced the 131-9A in 1998 and continues Kingfisher – APU/Avionics technological advances to the design –for example, an available de-rate modification reduces fuel consumption by 5 percent by optimizing power output for the aircraft, while also reducing carbon and other emissions.
The full avionics suite includes:
-- Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS)
-- Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS II) and Mode S Transponder
-- Weather Radar with Forward-Looking Windshear Detection System
-- Solid State Flight Data Recorder (SSFDR) & Solid State Cockpit Voice Recorders (SSCVR)
-- Quantum™ Line Communications/Navigation Sensors including Radio Altimeter, Antenna, ADF, DMR, MMR, VOR and VDR
-- High Frequency Voice/Data Radio and Coupler
-- Flight Management Systems (FMS) including retrofit on 19 A320s of erstwhile Air Deccan
-- Air Data Inertial Reference System (ADIRS).
-- ACARS ATSU AOC Software
-- High Speed Satellite Communication System (SATCOM Models: MCS7200 for A330 and Optional MCS7120/HD710 for 12 A321)
-- LED Navigation Lights Upgrade for existing A320 family aircrafts
-- Optional Weather Information Network Service
EGPWS, invented by Honeywell, provides a terrain display and alerts the flight crew if the aircraft approaches too close to terrain. Honeywell’s patented ACAS (aka TCAS - Traffic Collision Avoidance System) provides a display of surrounding aircraft and alerts the flight crew if another aircraft comes too close for safety. Honeywell’s radar provides essential weather detection up to 320 nautical miles, turbulence detection up to 40 nautical miles, and forward-looking windshear detection up to five nautical miles. FDR & CVR recorders record flight data parameters and cockpit voice conversation for analysis. CNS enables cockpit crew to interact with ground stations such as Air Traffic Control. ADIRS helps pilots keep the Aircraft on course by sensing its movement in all three dimensions. The MCS7200 SATCOM supports on board internet, e-mail, telephone/mobile usage while allowing crew communication in voice and data with ATC and ground teams.
Kingfisher – APU/Avionics
Honeywell’s LED navigation lights are the newest addition to A320 family product offering and are now standard equipment on all new A320s, with a plug-in upgrade option available to existing fielded aircraft.
“Honeywell provides a unique advantage of the widest avionics product range that is common to Kingfisher Airlines’ A320 and A330 fleet. By becoming the launch customer in the Indian subcontinent region for Honeywell’s new LED navigation lighting products, Kingfisher Airlines acknowledges Honeywell as innovators of products with longer life and higher reliability,” said Mr. C. S. Tomar, Vice President, Kingfisher Airlines.
Together, the APU, avionics suite and LED lighting upgrades help reduce maintenance and operating costs while increasing passenger safety and comfort.
The multi-million dollar contract extends selection of avionics suites up to 130 A320 family aircraft and 20 A330 aircraft deliveries through 2015. APU service for the A320 is extended until 2023.
Kingfisher Airlines is India’s only five-star airline rated by Skytrax, and the only one to offer premium first class domestic service.
