- While grow lights may be able to help grow tomatoes, direct sunlight is the best. Place them in areas that reach direct sunlight if you plan to grow them indoors. According to Weekend Gardener, eight hours of direct sunlight is ideal.
- Tomato plants that receive the right amount of sunlight will produce fruit. Weekend Gardener points out that tomatoes that fail to get enough sunlight will "produce little mature fruit".
- Too much sun can be a bad thing. If the sunlight is too harsh or the weather gets too warm, tomatoes can get sun scald. This ruins the fruit, causing it to rot.
- While sunlight is important, it is not enough. You need to be sure that you are watering the plant properly to ensure that it can grow. To make sure that the sunlight does not burn the plant, water toward the base of the plant.
- According to Linda McCandles of Cornell University, resist the urge to put tomatoes in the fridge once they have been picked. Keep them out, but do not put them in sunlight. Once they're picked, sunlight will ruin them.
