Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. bagged his 1000th career victory on March 3, 2007, at Santa Anita when Kip Deville won the $300,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (G1).
From a Racing Family:
Born on August 5, 1959, Dutrow is the son of the late Dick Dutrow, an east coast based trainer who died in 2000. His brother Tony is also a trainer who works out of Philadelphia Park and Delaware Park. Both went to the barns with their father as children and Richard started working as an assistant to his father at age 16.
Tough Beginning:
Dutrow went out on his own in the late 1990's when his father moved his stable from New York to Maryland. Things were tough with only one horse his stable and he had to live in his tack room at Aqueduct. In 2000, he got his first stakes winner with Stalwart Member who was owned by commodities trader Sanford Goldfarb. Goldfarb was the leading owner by wins in New York from 2001-2003 and his horses were responsible for Dutrow becomming a success. He was the leading trainer in New York for 2001 and 2002 and had been the leading trainer for 8 NYRA meets since 2001.
Biggest Wins and Stakes Winners:
In 2004 he won the Massachusetts Handicap (G2) at Suffolk Downs with Offlee Wild and the Pennsylvania Derby (G2) at Philadelphia Park with Love of Money. His biggest horse would have to be 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam who won the Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) and the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) and Silver Train who won the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) and the Met Mile (G1). Other stakes winners he has trained are Sis City, Carson Hollow, Thunder Blitz, Classic Endeavor, Well Fancied, and Cativa.
