- 1). Develop a thesis or clear statement the paper will support. The goal of the essay is to explain or clarify. Statements made in the paper must be backed up by information obtained from reliable, authoritative sources. Closely examine your logic. Correct information can lead to the wrong conclusions if logic is not applied with precision.
- 2). Research the topic and create an outline. It is best to have an idea of the how the paper will flow before sitting down to write. Make an outline by dividing the expository response into several paragraphs. Use bullet points to organize the outline and determine which facts will appear where in the final draft of the paper.
- 3). Use a variety of resources to provide factual information. Resources can be found online through educational and government websites, as well as published works of research. Don’t forget to use magazines, books and newspapers. Make sure sources are credible by checking the author’s credentials and being mindful of when the source was published.
- 4). Find out which writing style guidelines the educator expects. Some teachers prefer Modern Language Association while others instruct students to use Associated Press guidelines. If the expository response is based around science or other medical information, the instructor may prefer American Psychological Association.
- 5). Proofread and edit. Read through the first finished draft to look for content errors. Once changes are made to the content, read through the paper again looking for punctuation and other mechanical errors.
- 6). If a title page is requested by the educator, create a one and also include an organized list of all references to complete the expository response.
