How to Troubleshoot the Problems With a Maytag Refrigerator Ice Maker

    • 1). Move the ice maker's shutoff arm into the "On" position. If the shutoff arm is up, this means the ice maker is turned off. Simply press down on the arm to turn it to the "On" position.

    • 2). Wait at least 24 hours after the refrigerator is hooked up before you attempt to disperse ice. It takes approximately this long for the freezer to reach the proper temperature to be able to produce ice. It takes approximately 72 hours for an ice maker to completely fill up the ice bin. Manufacturers recommend throwing out the first two batches of ice a new refrigerator makes rather than consuming it.

    • 3). Check the water line at the back of the refrigerator. The water line should be inserted into the connection at the bottom of the back of the appliance. Twist the nut at the connection to tighten the connection. A loose connection can lead to leaks and a lack of water pressure, which hampers the ice-making process.

    • 4). Allow 24 hours for the ice maker to produce more ice if you have just emptied the ice bucket.

    • 5). Use your hand or a plastic utensil to clear out any ice that might be stuck in the ice dispenser chute. A buildup of ice in the dispenser does not allow ice to freely flow from the ice maker to your glass and can cause ice to fall to the floor of your refrigerator.

    • 6). Wrap securely the food around the ice maker if you notice an unpleasant odor or smell in the ice.
