- 1). Decide whether you will be painting or restaining the cedar chest and choose shade. If painting, you will want to buy primer and paint. New products are available that include primer and paint all in one.
- 2). Remove any hardware or other small pieces from the cedar chest. This includes the lid of the chest and any hinges, clasps, etc. that may be attached.
- 3). Sand entire cedar chest and lid to remove the old finish. Be sure to use the sanding sponge to get into any cracks or crevices to ensure that you have a clean surface to apply the new finish.
- 4). Wipe the chest with a dry rag to remove any sawdust or debris before starting the staining process.
- 5). Dip the corner of the staining sponge into the new stain and blot excess.
- 6). Wipe the cedar chest in long, even strokes, following the direction of the wood grain.
- 7). Continue staining all parts of the cedar chest until all the surfaces have been covered.
- 8). Allow stain to dry for approximately one hour before adding a second coat of stain or covering with polyurethane coat.
