Many freelancers or self-employed people work from home and this is a trend that is increasing every year.
Furnishing your home office is one of the first steps you need to take before you take ownership of your new office at home.
After all without proper furniture, you won't be able to work at all.
At a minimum you need a table, a chair, some filing cabinets, drawers and book shelves to get you started.
The first thing you need to do is measure the room to see how much space you have.
You need to have enough space for your necessary furniture.
You don't want to overdo it as you need an office, not a warehouse, however when buying your furniture pieces, you will need to know how big or bulky they should be in order to properly fit in the room.
Also don't try to turn your office into a living room.
A television has nothing to do in there, and the same goes for a radio.
You do need a computer to work, however avoid any distractions from your regular work.
Treat your home office as a regular, professional work place where you will enjoy sitting for many hours doing your daily tasks.
There are many small extras that you will need in the office, such as pens, pencils, printer paper and other office supplies, so you will need drawers to store all those in.
Avoid putting everything on top of your desk.
Leave the desk empty with the minimum on it that you absolutely need.
You do want to have a professional looking office where not only you will feel good but also your visitors.
It is important that the office space at home is comfortable, functional, and at the same time clean and organized.
You don't want to have clutter all over the place.
All folders, documents and other supplies should be neatly arranged in their storage place and away from the work space.
You can add a few plants around the office to make it more homey, however, avoid adding too much 'personality' in your office.
After all, this is not your relaxation room or living room.
It is the place where you will continue to earn your money and be a business professional.
