How to Landscape Rock and How Much Area

    • 1). Place a tape measure at the end of the landscaping area and stretch it across to measure the length in feet. Repeat the process to measure the width of the landscaping area as well. Multiply the two numbers together to arrive at the total number of square feet you must cover.

    • 2). Divide the total square footage number by 80 to arrive at the number of tons of landscape rock you need to purchase for a 3-inch depth. For example, If the area measures 10 feet wide by 10 feet long, it is 100 square feet; 100 square feet divided by 80 is 1.25 tons of landscape rock.

    • 3). Remove any existing plants, mulch, leaves and other debris from the landscape area using a shovel or a rake.

    • 4). Place the end of a roll of landscape fabric at one edge of the area and unroll it until you reach the other end. Cut the landscape fabric from the roll using scissors. Place the roll beside the starting position and overlap the first sheet by 4 inches. Unroll the second row of fabric. Continue until the entire area is covered in landscape fabric to block out the weeds.

    • 5). Move the landscape rock over to the landscape area using a wheel barrow. Distribute the rock on top of the landscape fabric using a shovel. Continue refilling the wheel barrow with rock and installing it into the desired area until all of the rock is gone or the installed rock is approximately 3 inches thick.

    • 6). Stand on top of the rock and use a wide-toothed rake to smooth the top surface until it is even.

    • 7). Spray the entire surface of the landscape rock with a hose to wash off the dust.
