Is this the last day any of us will see the earth? What will happen on this day? People throughout history have always had a thirst for impending doom.
You've read it in the history books and you see it everywhere.
Most recently it was Harold Camping, who had predicted the return of Jesus Christ to Earth.
He and his fanatical followers spent countless time and money trying to convince the world that on a specific date, certain people would be taken to heaven.
Those left behind would face hard times before perishing in the Earth's destruction, That didn't happen.
In the early 1900's, the Jehovah's Witnesses predicted that the start of the war of Armageddon would start in 1914.
They had come to this conclusion from what they called prophecy in the book of Daniel.
They took a phrase from Chapter 4 referring to "seven times", which they translated to mean 360 days.
They calculated some crazy math to put the start of the war at 1914.
When that year came and went without the chaos they were sure to happen, they quickly changed their story to mean that 1914 was the year that Jesus invisibly began his rule.
And the followers actually still listened these people after all of this.
Amazing.
It seems that everyone jumps on board when it comes to the end of the world.
The Mayans, Aztecs, Nostradamus and even modern day Astronomers have all had their say of when the world will end.
Y2K - Now that was a real problem.
The using of two-digit dates predates computers, but was never a problem until stored dates were used in calculations.
When computer programmers started writing software sometime in the 1980's, the year 2000 wasn't on their radar.
The scare that came from that problem was real.
Were the banks just going to shut down? Would airlines be able to operate efficiently? But again, the world survived and moved on to another crisis.
So for now, at this moment, THIS IS THE YEAR! The build up to this date will be tremendous.
Hollywood has already started their campaign of World Ending movies.
The Discovery Channel has a myriad of shows dealing with the topic.
Merchandise is everywhere.
But why do we all get so caught up with it all? It's because people just don't know what's going to happen.
It seems like everything in history is pointing to this date.
And that's what makes it all sooo exciting! So jump on the bandwagon.
Buy a 2012 shirt.
Go see the 2012 movies.
Not because you really believe the world will end.
Just because it's so much fun! (And you can make fun of all the people that really do think it's going to end.
