- 1). Select the variety of bamboo. Ask questions about the characteristics–such as height, appearance and growth pattern.
- 2). Choose a site for the bamboo garden. Select a place that receives either full or partial sun and where the soil is rich and well-draining, as bamboo plants do not like wet soil.
- 3). Prepare the site where the bamboo will be grown. Turn over the soil with a shovel. Remove any large rocks, old plant debris and weeds. Loosen the soil with a hoe.
- 4). Dig a hole with the shovel, large enough to fit the bamboo plant. Make the hole about 2 inches deeper than the pot the bamboo plant came in to accommodate mulching on the top. Dig holes 2 to 3 inches deep if you are planting bamboo rhizomes instead of bamboo plants.
- 5). Fill the hole with loose soil. Do not add fertilizer or manure at this time, as it may burn the roots of the plant. Place mulch loosely around the bamboo plant, covering the holes that contain the rhizomes.
- 6). Monitor plants to determine water needs, as bamboo leaves will curl when the soil is too dry. Water the plants and keep the soil moist. Allow the soil to dry out a little between watering once the bamboo plants are well-established.
- 7). Add a general-purpose fertilizer, per package instructions, to the bamboo plants once a month.
- 8). Divide the bamboo rhizomes as the plants begin to multiply and spread. Dig up the rhizomes, divide them and replant in desired areas.
