- 1). Calculate the needed materials for the installation process by measuring each side of the roof. Measure from the bottom to the peak and multiply that by the width. This is the square area of the roof. A roll of tar paper covers 20-square feet of roof. Three bundles of 3-tab shingles or four bundles of dimensional shingles cover 10-square feet. Measure the perimeter of the roof to decide how many 10-foot pieces of drip ease metal you need. Purchase a 50-pound box of 1 ¼-inch roofing nails.
- 2). Remove the old roofing to bare wood sheathing. Install tar paper to the entire roof surface. Always run the paper from side-to-side and not from bottom to peak. Overlap the paper even with the top yellow line on the prior row run. Install nails and tin caps 4 inches apart on all seam overlaps. Nail off the rest of the paper with every nail and tin cap no more 4 inches from the next. Install drip ease metal around the entire perimeter of the roof. Overlap each piece 4 inches, and install a nail every 4 inches in the metal.
- 3). Cut the black part off the amount of shingles needed to cover the length of the metal on each side with a utility knife. Nail the black parts along the bottom edge of the metal on each side of the roof every 4 inches. Lay a row of shingles across the bottom edge on one side of the roof, making sure the bottom of the shingle is even with the bottom edge of the metal. Put a 1-inch roofing nail just above the waterline open gap on each side of the gap. Continue to nail all these shingles in the same manner. Put an extra nail in the first and last shingle, where it meets the side of the drip ease metal. These extra nails should be about 4 inches above the existing one. There are slits in the top of each shingle. Use them for a guide as to where the next row of shingles starts. Lay another row of shingles above the first. The bottoms should be even with the tops of the gaps. One side will overlap the drip ease. Cut a piece to fit the exposed area on the other side.
- 4). Cut any excess overhanging shingle off the edge of the roof. Continue this process until the entire side is covered, and the last row overlaps the peak. Nail the overlapped part to the other side of the roof so it is not sticking up. Repeat this process on the other side of the roof.
- 5). Cut a bundle or two of shingles into three parts, using the waterlines in each shingle as a guide. Cut a section off each side of the black part of the shingle tabs so it angles inward. Install these shingles along the peak of the roof. Nail each tab on both sides near the edge, just below the tar line. Use 2-inch nails for the caps. Cut the last cap from the exposed part of the shingle. Put it down with roofing cement. Cut off any excess shingle overlapping the edge of the roof.
