How Do I Determine If My House Was Built on Pilings?

    Use

    • Pilings are used in poor soil condition to prevent further erosion from waves or floods, though such a foundation will not protect the house from hurricane damage. Pilings are driven 10-15 feet into the ground to provide long lasting support for a building structure.

    Key Feature

    • A crawl space underneath the house is a key feature of a home built on pilings or a pier and beam foundation.

    Appearance

    • Some piling foundations are obvious from the face of the house. The pilings will be solid posts. If a veneer or lattice was built around the foundation, look at the posts from inside the crawl space. If the posts are bell bottomed, then your home is not built on pilings.
