- 1). Average your monthly power bills over a year to determine power requirements. Add at least 30 percent to your peak monthly requirement to plan for capacity because it's much better to have excess capacity than not enough. Estimate greater power requirements if you plan to have children. Calculate how many panels you will need and spacing requirements for the panels. Purchase a kit that includes panels, wiring, power equipment, fixtures, and installation instructions.
- 2). If you are putting the panels on the roof, install the bolting devices into the wood beams that support the roof. Align the bolting devices properly so that the panel tracks can be attached. Test each bolting device to ensure that it is attached firmly.
- 3). Attach the panel tracks to the bolting devices that are bolted to the roof beams. Bolt each track to the top of the bolting device.
- 4). Attach the electric box to the back of each panel, if necessary (some panels are pre-connected). Connect a power wire to each box.
- 5). Place the panels so they'll receive optimal sunlight. Use an extension brace if necessary. Attach the panels directly to the tracks or the extension brace. Run plastic protective conduit for the wires if necessary, depending on where you put the wire into the house. Connect the wire to the inverters in the house after installing them.
