How to Cite in Essays

    • 1). Use in-text citations as you write the essay. In-text citations utilize a quick parenthetical reference at the end of the sentence in which the source was used. For books and articles with known authors, cite the work by listing the author's last name and the page number in parenthesis. For example, "There have been multiple studies which suggest increased risk for injury (Smith 10)."

    • 2). Cite a source without a known author or a one-page source. To create an in-text citation for these items, type out a shortened version of the title. For an article, put the title in quotation marks. For example, ("Symposium"). The title might have been "A Symposium on Learning" but this longer title will take up too much space in the text. Use the most approachable and central word in the title to create the citation.

    • 3). Build an alphabetized bibliography. Use each author's last name as a building block for creating the bibliography. Create the works cited page as a separate document with a title reading "Works Cited".

    • 4). Format all of the sources in alphabetical order according to the type of source. For a book with one author, the bibliographic citation with the last name then first name of the author, the title of the book, the place of publication, the publisher and the year of publication. Finally the type of publication should be noted down. An example of a book with a single author would look like this:

Gleick, James. Chaos: Making a New Science. New York: Penguin, 1987. Print.

Be sure to italicize book titles, a format we cannot show you in this article.

    • 5). Cite periodicals similarly to a book citation. Start with the author's last name then first name, the title of the article in quotation marks, the title of the publication, the day, month and year of publication and the page numbers the article takes in the volume. Once again note the form of media in the citation. For example:

Buchman, Dana. "A Special Education." Good Housekeeping Mar. 2006: 143-48. Print.

Italicize the name of the journal or periodical.

    • 6). Cite electronic sources by including the date of access. This citation style should begin with the compiler name, if available, followed by the name of the site, the version number, the name of the organization affiliated with the site, the date of publication, the medium and the date of access.

      For example:

The Purdue OWL Family of Sites. The Writing Lab and OWL at Purdue and Purdue U, 2008. Web. 23 Apr. 2008.

The title of the website should be italicized.

    • 7). Format the works cited page with all citations double-spaced and with 1 inch margins. Indent the second line of each citation, leaving the first line flush to the left.
