- The water supply is the first place you should check when the ice maker stops making ice. First see if the tap valve has been turned to the "Off" position and has cut off water to the refrigerator. If it has, turn it on and you're all set. Otherwise, you should inspect the line inside the compartment to see if it is frozen. Sometimes ice can form in the supply line because of other problems and block off the water supply to the ice maker. To thaw it, you'll have to open the refrigerator and freezer, remove the perishable foods and let the line thaw. The rest of the unit will defrost as well. If you can pinpoint the frozen portion of the line, you can use a hairdryer to thaw it to restore the water supply.
- Even if you have water going to the ice maker and the mechanism is working correctly, you may not get ice cubes. For the water in the cube molds to turn to ice, the temperature in the freezer has to be low enough. Preferably the freezer is at 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, but it could be higher and even above freezing. You can tell by checking the foods stored in the freezer. If they are thawed, you know you have a temperature problem. But the thermostat setting could possibly be set wrong. Ensure it is dialed down to the appropriate level, and give it a chance to freeze. Once the temperature is low enough, the ice maker will start kicking out cubes again.
- Sometimes the solution to a problem is so easy you overlook it. Ice makers have a movable arm mounted on the unit that turns the machine on and off. When it is in the lower position, the ice maker works; when it is raised either by hand or piled up ice, it will shut off. Even reaching into the ice storage bin to get some cubes could be enough to inadvertently pop the shutoff arm into the "Off" position. Until you click it back down, the machine will not make any more ice.
- Some Amana refrigerator models feature a filtered drinking water dispenser on the front of the freezer door. In most of these models, the filter also filters the water going to the ice maker. When this filter is removed or becomes so dirty that it clogs the flow, there will be little or no water from the dispenser and no water reaching the cube molds in the ice maker. Some models have an indicator light to tell owners when to change the filter. Check yours, and, if it does not have a light, assume it is dirty and replace it to restore the free flow of water.
