Like any artform, a model railroad is an extension of the personality of its creator.

No two layouts are ever the same. As long as it makes you happy, there is no right or wrong way to design and build one.

I have an uncle who lives nearby who loves model trains. Our layouts couldn't be more different and yet we always have a blast when we visit. Chuck could spend hours at my place learning new ways to build benchwork or lay track. A visit to his garden always reminds me of just how much fun trains can be when you just let yourself go.

If Chuck's layout has a theme, it is simply fun and family. Strict adherence to scale and details take a back seat to creating a scene that works and tells a story. One part of the railroad represents the mountains of Montanna where the family has a cabin. Around the corner is a model of the Baltimore row home where he grew up. Additional scratchbuilt models represent the homes of other family and friends or just interesting buildings from around town.

Through all of this 3-D family album race Lionel trains and toy slot cars. Old toys have become operating cranes, loaders and other accessories. And every visit brings something new. When inspiration strikes, Chuck never thinks twice about tearing out and trying something new.
