- 1). Open all of the windows in the home---at the very least, open one or two windows on either side of the home on each floor. Move your curtains, shades and blinds aside completely to allow the air in your home to move outward. This will promote cross-ventilation of air. Open the entrance and back door of your house as well.
- 2). Place a window fan in at least one of the windows on each floor and turn it on the highest setting. The air will blow from that window across the room (creating a breeze) and eventually out of the windows on the other side of the house.
- 3). Position a fan in each main room of the house as well, preferably high-powered floor fans. Heat rises to the ceiling, so the fan should point upward and toward an open window to help move some of that heat out of the home. Place the majority of your fans on the top floor of your home, since most of the heat will be there.
- 4). Switch on the wall fan in your kitchen, which blows smoke away from the stove to help move some of the hot air out of your home.
- 5). Make sure that all of the vents in your home, such as the ones in your attic, foundation (basement) and crawlspaces, are completely open to allow the hot air out.
