- 1). Determine your coverage needs. Assess the value of your bike and list its make and model. Keep in min that if you have a custom-made or older-style bike, you will need an insurance agency that carries insurance for that style, make and model motorcycle.
- 2). Limit your search to three insurance carriers at a time. It may be easier to pick the best out of three choices instead of best out of 10. You can always compare another set of three insurance carriers if you are not satisfied with your original selections.
- 3). Seek out motorcycle insurance agencies that offer seasonal coverage. When you store your bike in winter months, collision coverage is not needed. Some agencies will remove this type of coverage -- upon your request -- while maintaining coverage for natural disasters and theft. Verify that you will pay less during off-season months.
- 4). Compare deductibles in order to make a fair insurance policy assessment. A $250 to $1,000 deductible range for collision insurance is common. Expect to pay between $100 to $500 or more for deductible for comprehensive insurance coverage.
- 5). Evaluate discounts between motorcycle insurance companies. Many companies offer discounts if you have attended a class on motorcycle safety, belong to a professional motorcycle riding organization or put an anti-theft device on your bike. Some insurers may also give you a discount if you have multiple bikes insured or store your bike in a garage when you are not riding it.
