How Do You Troubleshoot a 24 Volt Transformer?

    • 1). Locate the input and output terminals on the transformer. The input terminal will be labeled as primary and the output terminals will be marked secondary. Inspect the transformer and the connecting lines for any damage. Corrosion will appear as a rust-like patina on the metal. Any dents or rents in the transformer itself would also cause it to malfunction. If the connecting wires are the only thing damaged, the transformer is probably fine and you just need to replace the wires.

    • 2). Hook the item up to its power supply so that the circuit is live. Turn the multimeter to voltage and hook the red lead to the input terminal and the black lead to the output terminal. The multimeter should show 24 volts (+/- .1 volt) if the transformer is functioning properly. If the voltage is less, there is not enough power coming into the transformer and there may be a problem with the power supply itself. If the voltage is too much, the transformer may be broken and needs to be replaced.

    • 3). Turn the multimeter to resistance and check the readout. The multimeter should read complete or continuity, indicating the circuit is complete and continuous. If not, there is a break in the circuit within the transformer and it needs to be replaced.
