How to Install New Bathroom Wall Tile

    • 1). Screw a flat, wooden board to the wall along the bottom of your first tile row, using a drill. This will ensure that your bottom row of tiles sits level all the way around. If you are installing tile straight down to the tile floor, use the floor as a guideline.

    • 2). Mix tile thinset or mortar per specific product instructions. Different types of mortar will require different mixtures of water or other additives, so follow directions carefully.

    • 3). Spread a layer of mortar horizontally across the line for your first row of tiles, extending 4 to 5 feet on one wall. Use the flat edge of a mason's trowel to ensure an even layer of mortar. Work in small areas at a time only, or the thinset might dry too quickly and become unworkable.

    • 4). Firmly press each of the tiles for your first row into place. If necessary, install plastic spacers between tiles to maintain even joints. Gently tap each tile into place with a rubber mallet to ensure full adhesion.

    • 5). Spread the mortar and install the next row of tiles. Tap them into place, and use a level so they are sitting evenly across the row with each other. Continue to mortar, install, tap and level each row across each row.

    • 6). Cut tiles as necessary to fit onto edges or into tight areas. Hold the tile up to the space needed and mark the back of the tile with a marker along the cut line. Score the tile with a sharp utility knife or tile cutter and snap it along the line.

    • 7). Scrape excess mortar off the walls and tiles with a putty knife or clean trowel when installation is complete. Allow the thinset to dry overnight.

    • 8). Mix tile grout and water per specific product instructions. Spread grout across the surface with a grout float, working diagonally and holding the float at a 45-degree angle to force the grout into the joints. Fill in all joints completely, leaving no gaps or spaces.

    • 9). Wipe the tiles with a damp sponge to remove all excess grout. If a haze begins to form, buff the tiles clean with a dry rag to clear it away. Allow the grout to dry overnight.
