- 1). Remove any carpeting or other obstructions from the existing floor and get it clean and dry. Roll foam underlayment along one side of the floor, cutting it to fit with utility knife. Roll subsequent courses alongside the first, taping them together at the seams with duct tape. Cover the whole floor.
- 2). Set your first course of flooring along the starting wall, connecting the boards at the ends and positioning them with the grooved edges facing the wall. Set wood shims between the boards and the wall to make a thin gap there, so the floor will have room to expand with climate changes (the gap will be covered by floor trim). Cut the final board in the course to fit, using a miter saw.
- 3). Lay the next courses by connecting them at the sides of the first course. Lay the courses with the ends of the boards staggered from course to course so they don't line up. Cut the end boards as needed. Cover the whole floor.
- 4). Cut the boards for the final course lengthwise on a table saw, so they will fit by by the wall with a roughly 1/4-inch gap there. Take out the shims from the starting wall.
- 5). Install floor trim over the edges of the flooring, cutting it to size with your miter saw and securing it with the your trim nail gun. Shoot the nails through the wall, not the flooring.
