- 1). Go to the U.S. Department of Human Services - Administration for Children & Families website (See Resources). Click on Child Support under the heading ACF Services. Click on Child Support Enforcement Office. Click on Homepages under State Child Support Agency Links. Click on your state and you will be redirected to your state's child support enforcement agency which will get a support order for you for free even if you are a non-recipient of state or federal benefits.
- 2). Find the link that suggests you can apply for assistance on your state's website. Follow the instructions on the web page. Contact your state's child support enforcement agency by phone if you have questions. Look for a Contact Us link on the website to get the phone number. Call the number and write down the instructions offered. Gather any documents needed and follow the instructions given, including attendance at any appointments.
- 3). Visit the American Bar Association website if your state agency can't help you or you prefer not to use them. Click on the tab entitled "Public Resources" on their main page. Click on "Lawyer Referral Services" under the "Get Legal Help" heading. Click on your state on the page entitled "Consumers' Guide to Legal Help." Click on "Select a State" from the choices on the left hand page. Click on "Free Legal Help" under the "Find a Lawyer" heading. Click on "Other Sources for Legal Help" if you do not qualify for free help under federal poverty guidelines. Click on the list presented and choose an agency. Those listed will help moderate income families on a sliding scale.
