- 1). Purchase your supplies at the local hardware store. Most large home-improvement stores carry Tyvek on their shelves, along with the proper nails and the Tyvek tape.
- 2). Apply the Tyvek over the outside fiberboard of the house. This may also be plywood. Tyvek comes in a roll and you simply roll out the Tyvek as you go across the surface of the house. Unroll the Tyvek on an upper or lower portion of the house to ensure that it is rolling along a straight line.
- 3). Staple down the Tyvek as you go, using a hammer tacker. The Tyvek should be adhered to the outer plywood every foot or so. You can also use a hammer and nails but, because Tyvek is a fabric, you need to use nails that are designed to hold down fabric. Felt roofing nails with an outside felt washer work well.
- 4). Cut an X pattern with your razor knife where you have rolled the Tyvek over windows and door holes. This will allow you to wrap the Tyvek around the window or door frame and fasten it inside the structure, creating a impenetrable seal from exterior water and wind.
- 5). Tape all of the seams between the Tyvek with Tyvek tape. You want to make sure that the work you are putting in now lasts and using inferior tapes can cause problems down the road. If you don't want to pay the price that DuPont Tyvek tape costs, home improvement stores often carry generic brands that will save you some money without the loss of performance.
