Contractors and restorers can learn about using heat to dry water-damaged buildings on a course being run by the National Flood School this month.

The one-day course ‘Drying With Heat' has been designed to provide an introduction to the basics of heat drying – and to help contractors add a potentially lucrative skill to their portfolios.

Delegates receive a combination of technical instruction in the classroom as well as unique hands-on experience of damage, equipment and techniques in the NationalFloodSchool's Flood House.

Believed to be the only purpose-built floodable house inEurope, the Flood House is made up of eight rooms and 60 common household materials – providing a comprehensive test-bed for training and development.

Delegates will also practice how to set up heat drying systems on site and learn about monitoring the drying process. Equipment demonstrated will include trailer-mounted heaters, the Drymatic drier and the GH30 – a system of up to four internal heat exchangers hooked up to an external boiler.

Chris Netherton, Managing Director of Surrey-basedNationalFloodSchool, said: "We introduced this course last year and it proved to be really popular.

"Using the Flood House means people can see the aftermath of flooding and learn about heat drying processes in a real situation.

"Students will be able to see how a building reacts to heat drying processes and consider issues such as whether to strip out the building thoroughly – and the effect heat has on micro-organisms and on building materials.

"This is the sort of knowledge insurance companies and loss adjustors will expect contractors to have, so it's an opportunity to add skills that can help bring in a significant amount of business."

The Drying With Heat Course is being held on Tuesday, November 29 at the school's Farnham headquarters.
