How to Make Steel

    • 1). Acquire the right combination of metal ores. To start with you will need iron ore. However, since iron is not found in a pure form naturally, you will need to find iron-rich minerals like Hematite to extract the iron ore from. Next, since steel is an alloy you will need to first determine what type of hardening ore you want to add to your iron and then find the ore for that metal. The most commonly added elements to iron to form steel include carbon, manganese, vanadium, chromium and tungsten.

    • 2). Crush and smelt your ores. To smelt each ore you will need to heat it to the metal’s melting point. The melting points for the above metals are as follows: iron 1,538 degrees C, carbon 3,675 degrees C, manganese 1,246 degrees C, chromium 1,857 degrees C, vanadium 1,902 degrees C and tungsten 3,407 degrees C.

    • 3). Combine your molten metals to form molten steel. Pour into sheets or pour into a mold.
