Skin Care For Winters

After the harsh heat of summers, we all look forward to some respite in the weather. Winter comes with its own set of problems for the skin. The cold wind, low ambient humidity and the sun bathing in the afternoons wreaks havoc on the skin. Here are a few tips by Skin Specialist, Dermatologist and Cosmetologist Dr. Sirisha Singh to fight these and continue to look your best through the winter months.

1.Cleansing: Use a good cleanser 2 times a day. A pH neutral cleanser or cleansing milk may be more appropriate as it will not leave your skin feeling dry. Use of a toner may be confined to the T zone but if the skin feels dry, then a toner may not be required.

2. Moisturiser: This tends to take on greater importance in the winter months. No matter what your skin type, you should use a moisturizer says Skin Specialist Dr. Sirisha Singh. The thickness of the moisturizer you choose depends on your skin type. You can try a few moisturisers to find one thats appropriate for you. The appropriate moisturiser is one that leaves your skin feeling soft and supple and doesnt leave your skin oily.
If you've got itchy or dry skin, you'll probably want to lock in moisture with a thick ointment. Creams are thinner, help hydrate, and are good for normal skin. Lotions are the lightest (water is their main ingredient) and are a good match for oily skin.

3. Sunscreen: A sunscreen protects your skin from the harmful UV rays present in the environment. Although visible light is less intense in summers, UV rays are very penetrative and are present even during winters and cloudy days. Using a sun protection during winters is therefore highly recommended. Use oil and fragrance free sunscreen, apply a generous amount 30 minutes before going out into the sun and reapply a layer of sunscreen every 2 hours for the duration of sun exposure for optimal protection. A sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 is usually adequate if generous amounts are being used. It is a good idea to use the sunscreen on all exposed areas like the hands and feet as well.

4. Nutrition: I use the term nutrition as opposed to diet, as diet is usually associated with restricting your calorie intake to achieve weight loss. Nutrition on the other hand means eating the right food at the right time to optimise the body functioning and the overall wellness and energy levels says Dermatologist and Cosmetologist Dr. Sirisha Singh. Eating right is very important for the skin. A few modifications can be done in the daily routine like adding flaxseeds to cereal. Eat a lot of juicy fruits like oranges and guavas, Increasing the intake of tomatoes and salads. Also ensure that you drink plenty of fluids like water and coconut juice to detoxify the skin.

Most important of all, dont forget to have fun along the way as happiness reflects on your skin as a healthy glow. Follow these simple tips and chill your way to a glowing skin this winter.
