Vanilla Cake With Chocolate Frosting

Vanilla Bean Cake With Old-Fashioned Vanilla Frosting

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 8 egg whites (unbeaten)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 2 tablespoons warm water

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 25 minutes


  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 12 to 16 Servings


Preparation
  1. Into a medium bowl, sift together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Add egg whites, unbeaten, alternately with sifted flour, salt and cream of tartar which have been sifted together, beating well.
  3. Add buttermilk all at once and then add vanilla; beat until well blended.
  4. Add soda and water combination; blend well.
  5. Pour into 3 greased and floured 8-inch cake pans.


  1. Bake in 350° oven 20 to 25 minutes.
