The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote a poem about an ancient sea mariner in his well-known piece, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." The opening lines of the poem read, "It is an ancient Mariner,
And he stoppeth one of three. `By thy long beard and glittering eye, Now wherefore stopp'st thou me?" A modern-day sea mariner is known as a sailor. Give the sailor in your life a piece of mariner history with a gift that honors the work and stories of the sea mariners of old. - If you are looking for a classic and traditional gift that also is creative, then consider giving your friend an old copy of Samuel Taylor Coleridge poetry that includes his famous "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." Check used book stores and online used book sellers for a sturdy, decorative copy.
- The Ancient Mariner Regatta in northern California has been an annual event since 1952. Thousands of "sea scouts" and "mariners" compete in 26 sailing and related events, such as whaleboat races, knot-tying, and seamanship contests. The event is held every Memorial Day. Purchase tickets to this event for a sailing enthusiast. If your budget allows, you also will want to make this an all-expense-paid vacation.
- For the sailing enthusiast buy a model boat that is from the age of the ancient sea mariner. Examples might include a Viking longboat, a whale boat or a schooner. Select a model boat that already is assembled or a kit if your friend likes to build model boats. For an added "ancient sea mariner" touch, include a greeting card that quotes "The Rime of the Ancient Sea Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
