Importance of Omega 3 in Fetal Brain Development

Nothing is more creative than giving birth to a child.
It's the most beautiful gift that Mother Nature has bestowed upon women.
And as a responsible to be mother you are taking all possible care and precautions for your unborn child.
But do you know that almost 80% of pregnant women are deficient of Omega3 fatty acids? This has a direct effect on fetal brain development of your unborn child.
Our brain is a mass of tissues and fat; a large portion of that fat is Docosahexaenoic acid commonly known as DHA or more commonly known as Omega 3 fatty acid.
Therefore a growing fetus needs ample nourishment of omega 3 fatty acids for proper brain development.
Since the only source of nourishment for a fetus is what pregnant mothers eat; it is vital that the regular diet of a to be mother includes food rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
Studies have shown that babies whose mothers were regularly taking high quality fish oil during pregnancy were found to have lesser sleep related disorders.
Also while growing up the same set of kids showed better hand and eye coordination.
Further, when the same set of kids grew up they showed better vocabulary and comprehension skills.
In nutshell, they had better IQs compared to the kids whose mothers did not take required diet of fish oil during pregnancy.
The question that intrigued me was - If fish oil is so important for fetal brain development then why don't mothers who were on high sea food diet including fish did not show the same results? The answer lies in the purity of fish oil.
World today, including land, air and water is a polluted place.
Oceans have higher levels of mercury and other toxins like lead, PCBs etc.
These impurities are consumed at various levels of food chain.
And hence this contamination is increased 100 folds by the time any sea food reaches us.
So, as a pregnant women you should better rely on fish oil supplements rather than taking seafood directly to make up for fatty acid deficiency.
Fish oil supplements have swamped the pharmaceutical market like locusts - you should be very careful while choosing the best quality product.
You should take a look at Certificate Of Analysis associated with the product that you are buying.
COA tells you the level of impurities present in it.
An effective and pure one will have minimum level of toxins.
You also need to make sure that the oil you are buying is fresh.
You can check this by cutting the soft gel and putting it to the smell test.
If there is any rancid odor or any artificial fragrance then discard the product.
Fresh supplement will smell like ocean.
And last but not the least; do consult your gynaecologist before you start any fish oil supplement.
