- 1). Get a secure ladder or high step. Unless you have a low door or are quite tall, you will need to get on one in order to hang your drapes.
- 2). Measure the door's width and height with measuring tape. Add 4 inches to the height measurement to find out the length of drapes you need -- you want the drapes to barely skirt the ground in front of the door, not noticeably hang above it.
- 3). Buy a curtain rod for the drapes that at least matches the width of the door. As long as it doesn't cause any obstructions and there isn't a wall nearby, you can get a longer curtain rod. Make sure the rod you buy is sturdy, especially if there will be constant traffic going in and out of the door, otherwise the drapes may end up falling down.
- 4). Purchase the drapes of your liking, or make custom drapes with fabric that complements your decor. A quick and fairly inexpensive alternative is to get a piece of fabric that is three or four times the height of your door and literally drape it over a curtain rod repeatedly to create a long swag. Drapes can be bought from a variety of brick-and-mortar and online retailers, including home decor, discount, home improvement, hardware and even some craft stores.
- 5). Read the installation instructions that come with your curtain rod. Typically, you will need to mount some brackets, which can be done with a hammer and screwdriver or power drill. After threading the drapes over the rod, you will likely place it over or into the brackets and the installation will be complete.
