The Meaning of the Maid of Honor

    Maid of Honor Defined

    • The maid of honor is an unmarried attendant of the bride. It is her job to ensure the wedding day goes off without a hitch for the bride.

    Pre-wedding Duties

    • A maid of honor helps the bride select a location, choose the wedding invitations, help address the invitations and choose and order decorations and favors. Helping the bride shop for the wedding dress and the bridesmaids dresses is a large responsibility of the maid of honor. The maid of honor often plans and holds the bridal shower. With the exception of the shower, the bride may choose to do other duties by herself or simply with the groom. Hence, in a nutshell, the maid of honor serves the bride as needed or requested.

    Wedding Day Duties

    • The maid of honor typically assists the bride getting dressed, with her hair and with her makeup. She witnesses the signing of the marriage license. She holds the bride's bouquet as well as the groom's ring during the ceremony. The maid of honor sometimes makes a toast at the reception.
