How to Prune Off Next Year's Dogwood Flowers

    • 1). Remove any dead, damaged or diseased branches from the dogwood tree. Cut the branches back to healthy wood, making the cut at the branch collar, the bulge where the branch meets the tree.

    • 2). Remove any lower branches that could impede reaching the higher branches. Cut those branches off with the loppers at the branch collar.

    • 3). Cut off any new growth on the dogwood tree in the late summer or early fall. Cut back all the small branches that grew in the current season since those will produce next year's flowers. Use the pruners to cut the branches back to the branch collar.
