Various Arists - Pure Chill
About.com Rating
This CD should be a part of any electronic music fan's medkit. After hours and days of pounding, uplifting tracks, you need something to cleanse the palate. Maybe any alternate style of music would suffice, but this CD is 100% electronica and 100% relaxing at the same time. Pure Chill is a collection of soothing tracks of the utmost quality. Artists such as Fila Brazillia, Thievery Corporation, Delerium, Bent, Blank & Jones and D:Fuse put in delicious slices of sonic relaxation.
From beginning to end, there is not a single bad track on this 16 track CD from Water Music.
Thievery Corporation feat. David Byrne "The Heart's A Lonely Hunter" is one of the most supreme of the selections. It doesn't relate to the book of the same title written by Carson McCullers, as the lyrics read "Welcome to my spaceship, you're beautiful forever?" However, the title is borrowed from a classic southern novel, and the song itself is a gem. The slow Rise mix of "You & I" by Delerium is hauntingly beautiful and will take you on a blissful trip through puffy little clouds. Bent's "Strictly Bongo" has a lazy beat and a hooky piano riff that groove beautifully easily. Lazy's "It's Over" busts out with a bossa nova rhythm and vocals that echo the timeless work of Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto. Moby is at it again with "Blue Paper" - simple, minimal piano work that melodically carries through ambient washes and a subtle beat.
De-Phazz brings a phatt and laid back beat combined with jazz vibes and soulful females vocals with "Zero Zero".
Careless' "Fields of Green" combines and ambient vibe with what is, if I'm not mistaken, an old Kenny Dope sample/beat. Very cool job of diggin' through the crates on that one. The CD ends with Lauren's "Dreamboy" (Sunset Mix) which is about a sweet and chill as can be. Overall, this is a fabulous collection of relaxing vibes? the best compilation of it's kind I've heard. You'll fall in love with this CD over time. Trust me.
