Scottish Traditional Games

    Stone Throw

    • This sport is similar to the shot-put. The stone used is called a clachneart and weights six to 22 lbs. All competitors get three throws, with the farthest throw counted. The athlete must stay in a designated area while throwing the clachneart or the throw will be considered a foul and not counted, even if it was the best of the three. The thrower rests the stone on his neck with one hand while he spins for momentum, then throws. Whichever athlete throws the clachneart the greatest distance wins.

    Tossing the Caber

    • The caber is a log weighing about 150 lbs. with a length of 18 feet, but varies in weight and length, since at least half the competitors must be able to throw it. It has one wide end and one narrow end. The thrower clasps his hands underneath the narrow end and holds the caber vertically. He then runs at any length within the judge's box before stopping to heave the caber up and over, so the wider end hits the ground first. The goal is to cause the caber to land in a vertical position straight away from the thrower, with the narrow end pointing toward 12 o'clock.

    Sheaf Toss

    • A burlap or plastic sack is filled with hay for the sheaf toss. This event is played by men and women. The men toss a 16 to 20 lb. hay bag and women toss one from 10 to 12 lbs. The athlete uses a pitchfork to throw the bag of hay over a crossbar. The toss is judged for achieved height. This sport derived from farmers pitching hay, who eventually turned it into a competition among clan members.

    Battle Axe Throw

    • The battle axes currently used in competition are military style axes the Highlanders once wielded. Although the axes are light, they can damage armor if thrown with enough force. Battle axe throwing is like playing darts, only with axes. Individual targets are set up and each athlete throw an axe towards the center of the target. The target distance is increased after each throw, until one athlete is the first to throw one of his axes into the target's center. Whichever athlete hits the center of his target first with the blade of the axe -- from the greatest distance -- wins the competition.

    Weight Throw

    • Weight throwing uses metal weights in varying shapes and sizes, hanging from a metal chain. The weights are 28 to 56 lbs. for men and 14 to 28 lbs. for women. Athletes swing the weight back and forth for momentum before spinning it around one to three times. Once momentum is achieved, the athlete releases the weight into the air. If distance is being judged, the winner is the athlete who throws the weight farthest. In the height event, a bar is placed between two poles and each thrower has three chances to achieve the designated height.
