- 1). Measure the width of the door opening using a tape measure. Hold one end of the tape measure flush against the door jamb and pull the tape horizontally across the doorway so it is parallel to the floor and the tape overlaps the opposite jamb. Record the measurement where the tape meets the door jamb.
- 2). Measure the height of the door by holding one end of the tape measure flush against the floor. Step your on the lip of the tape measure to hold it in place and pull the tape upwards so it overlaps the upper jamb of the door and the tape is perpendicular to the floor. Record the measurement.
- 3). Measure the width of the trim molding across the back. Add this measurement once to the height of the door opening and twice to the width to obtain the total length of trim necessary for each side of the door. A 7 foot 2 inch high doorway being trimmed with 3 inch wide molding requires 7 feet 5 inches of trim for each side. A 3 foot 8 inch wide doorway being trimmed with 3 inch wide molding requires 4 feet 2 inches of molding.
