How to Clean Fiber Glass Showers

    • 1). Wet the walls of the fiberglass shower enclosure thoroughly with hot water, using either the shower arm or a standard sponge.

    • 2). Squeeze liquid dishwash detergent onto a white, no-scratch, nylon scrub sponge. Ideally, you should use the type of sponge that has both a standard "sponge" side and a scrubbing surface on the other side, but a net-style scrub sponge combined with a standard sponge works well, too. A white sponge on a white enclosure is preferred in order to avoid lodging bits of colored sponge in any scratches or ruts that may already exist on the fiberglass surface.

    • 3). Scrub the walls of the shower with the sponge, first using the soft side-if it has one. Then use the scrubbing side to tackle anything that did not wipe off originally. Use the least amount of pressure necessary to remove scum and soil while scrubbing. Minimal pressure, plus using nonabrasive cleansers and nonabrasive cleaning tools (like the nylon sponge) helps avoid scratching the fiberglass.

    • 4). For hard-to-remove stains, wet the soiled area and the sponge with copious amounts of water. Shake baking soda onto your sponge and gently scrub the ground-in stain, being careful not to scratch the fiberglass. If your shower enclosure is white, you can also try applying hydrogen peroxide to the sponge and lightly scrubbing to gently lift the stain out.

    • 5). Once the stains have been treated, rinse the walls and floor of the shower enclosure thoroughly. Dispense dish soap--carefully, since it will make the floor very slippery--then give a final light scrub with baking soda, if necessary. Rinse clean. You may need to let the water run for several minutes to thoroughly rinse the dish soap.

    • 6). Blot excess water from the floor with a clean towel to absorb any slippery dish soap residue that may remain. Test the surface with your hand to make sure it's no more slippery than usual. Squeegee or towel the shower stall walls dry to help keep water spots from forming. If you get in the habit of drying the shower enclosure off after every shower, it will help prevent the buildup of soap scum.
