How to Change a Car Battery in a 1998 Honda Civic LX

    • 1). Open the hood of your Civic and locate the battery on the passenger's side of the engine compartment. Loosen the clamp bolt on the negative battery cable end with a wrench and remove the cable from the battery.

    • 2). Move to the positive battery cable and loosen the clamp bolt on the cable end just as you did with the negative. Lift the cable off the battery and lay it aside. Locate the two bolts on the front and rear of the battery hold-down, running over the top of the battery.

    • 3). Remove the two retaining bolts from the hold-down studs with a wrench. Lift the crossbar off the battery, then lift the battery out of the car. Place the new battery in the car, making sure to position the positive and negative battery terminals in the same orientation as the old ones.

    • 4). Place the hold-down crossbar over the battery, sliding it onto the hold-down studs then install the two retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts until the battery hold-down cross bar is snug and the battery does not move around.

    • 5). Install the positive battery cable on the positive battery terminal. Tighten the clamp bolt with a wrench then install the negative cable on the negative post. Tighten the retaining bolt on the negative battery cable end then close the hood.
