- 1). Have a power of attorney for finances document notarized. Both you and your father must sign the document in the presence of a notary. Have at least three copies notarized in case the bank requires an original copy to keep on file. This will still allow you to have two copies in case you need one for any other reason. You can get a blank power of attorney for finances form at many office supplies stores.
- 2). Call the bank or credit union you wish to open an account with. Let the representative know you are wanting to open an account for your father, and you have a power of attorney for finances document. Ask if there are any additional items you need to bring. You may be asked to bring your father's photo ID.
- 3). Go to the bank and bring the requested items. You will need to have your photo ID to prove you are the person listed in the power of attorney for finances document. A bank representative will open the bank account.
