- 1). Measure the dimensions of the window opening with the old windows still in place. Move the window sashes up or down as needed to get at the sides of the opening. Your new windows must fit these measurements. Don't remove the old windows until the new unit arrives.
- 2). Remove the trim that borders the inner edge of the window opening, using your hammer and pry bar. Keep the trim intact as you remove it. Set it aside.
- 3). Pull the window sashes into the room. They should come in freely without the interior trim in the way. Remove any remaining components along the edges of the opening with your hammer and pry bar, except the border of trim around the exterior edge of the opening, next to stucco exterior; that trim has to stay in place.
- 4). Stand the new window unit in the opening, putting the bottom in first, then pushing in the top, until it comes to rest against the exterior border of trim.
- 5). Set a level alongside the unit and slide wooden shims in around the edges to get it level and square. Secure it there by driving mounting screws outward through the holes in the sides of the window unit, into the edges of the frame.
- 6). Push fiberglass insulation in around spaces at the perimeter of the window.
- 7). Reinstall the trim around the inner border of the unit, using your hammer and trim nails. The trim should hide the spaces and trap the unit in place. Caulk the perimeter, using a caulk gun.
